PGCE entry requirements for all programmes

We seek high quality graduates who can demonstrate a commitment to teaching as a career and require the following qualifications for entry to all of our courses:

Qualifications required for all teacher training programmes

  • A bachelor’s degree awarded by a UK university or a recognised equivalent qualification
  • GCSE English and Maths (or equivalent) at grade C or above
  • GCSE Science (or equivalent) at grade C or above (required for primary applicants only)
  • Passes in both the literacy and numeracy Professional Skills tests
  • Applicants with qualifications outside the UK must obtain a Certificate of Comparability from the National Academic Recognition Information Centre (NARIC)

School Direct PGCE entry requirements – Salaried

In addition to the above, applicants for this programme need a minimum of 3 years’ work experience (in any career, it doesn’t have to be educational) but should generally apply to the years following graduation. Exceptions may be made for those applying to shortage subjects (physics, chemistry, mathematics).

Teaching is a demanding though rewarding profession so in addition to these qualifications, we also have some additional PGCE entry requirements to ensure this is the right career choice for you.

Classroom experience

We expect you to have at minimum of two weeks’ classroom experience before you come to interview. However, a longer and more continuous experience would help you to demonstrate your commitment to teaching and also to be sure that teaching is the right career path for you. It will also ensure that you are really well prepared for your interview and related tasks.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS)

In order to protect children and young people and to check your suitability to teach you will be required to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) barred list and criminal records check. If you have spent time abroad, we will also undertake an Overseas Criminal Record Check. We will arrange these once you have been offered a place on a programme.

Fitness to Teach

You will be required to complete a health questionnaire and satisfy Fitness to Teach requirements.

Eligibility to study in the UK

If you are not a British national you must ensure via the Home Office/UK Border Agency that you are eligible to study in the UK.

If you have studied outside the UK, please check the National Academic Recognised Information Centre to find out whether your qualifications are equivalent and acceptable for entry, you will need to get a Statement of Comparability if your qualifications were gained outside the UK.
